The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Joaquim Alberto
Chissano visited the Tata International office on May 15,
2003.
He was accompanied by his ministers and other government representatives.
The delegation was received by senior Tata directors, including
Syamal Gupta of Tata Sons, Ravi Kant of Tata Engineering,
as well as representatives from Tata International, TCS, and
Tata Consulting Engineers.
The meeting explored the prospects of projects in mini hydel
power plants, water conservation, food processing, salt from
the shores of the Indian Ocean, transport vehicles, construction
and material handling equipment and IT-enabled literacy programs
on the lines of TCSs efforts in Andhra Pradesh.
The Tata group has a presence in Mozambique. Tata Holdings
Mocabique Limitada is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Tata International,
which has stakes in two companies in Mozambique, in both of
which the Mozambique Government holds a 49 per cent stake:
South Africa subsidiaries and joint ventures
- Tata de Mocambique Limitada
- Cometal
The activities in Mozambique:
- Workshop: For sales and after-sales service of Tata Engineering
vehicles in the region;
- Cometal - Engineering jobbing shop facility;
- Supply and sales of bicycles and bicycle components, automotive
components, automotive tyres and glass.
After watching a brief presentation on the Tata Group, the
President remarked, "What we have in Mozambique is still
only a drop in your ocean", and urged the Tatas to do
more.
